Enter sides A, B, thickness t and length. By default rounded corners per EN 10219 are used (close to standard tables); you can choose square corners or enter a corner radius.
Square corners: kg/m = 0.0157 × t × (A + B − 2t)
Enter dimensions in mm.
Corner radii per EN 10219-2: outer radius R = 2t (t ≤ 6), 2.5t (6 < t ≤ 10), 3t (t > 10). Hot finished EN 10210-2: R = 1.5t, r = t. JIS G3466: R = 2t for all thicknesses. Inner radius r = R − t (except EN 10210). Leave R blank to use the standard value.
The quick method treats all 4 corners as square. Real hollow sections have rounded corners and are slightly lighter; EN 10219 calculates with rounded corners:
| Quantity | Formulas | Unit |
|---|---|---|
| Square corners (approx.) | 0.0157 × t × (A + B − 2t) | kg/m |
| Area with rounded corners (EN 10219) | 2t(A + B − 2t) − (4 − π)(R² − r²) | mm² |
| Weight with rounded corners | area × 7.85 / 1000 | kg/m |
| Outer paint area | [2(A + B) − (8 − 2π)R] / 1000 | m²/m |
R is the outer corner radius, r = R − t is the inner corner radius.

With rounded corners per EN 10219 (R = 8 mm): 8.59 kg/m. With square corners: 8.92 kg/m.
With rounded corners ≈ 2.31 kg/m; square corners 0.0157 × 2 × (80 − 4) ≈ 2.39 kg/m.
≈ 46.51 kg/m × 6 = 279 kg (rounded corners per EN 10219).
JIS G3466 uses outer corner radius R = 2t, giving kg/m = 0.0157 × t × (A + B − 3.287t). Example 100 × 50 × 4: 0.0157 × 4 × (150 − 13.15) ≈ 8.59 kg/m. Choose corner type JIS G3466 in the calculator.
EN 10219 tables and most manufacturers use rounded corners, so use rounded corners when comparing with tables or preparing an MTO. Square corners are quick, give a few percent more weight, and are on the safe side for estimating crane loads.
